Hi Mike,

I think I remember you posting way back about being excited about the wealth of data that would become available from online poker hand histories.

Have you been able to do any analysis and come to any useful or interesting conclusions? If so, are you going to share any of it?

Yes. We'll have that included in the poker odds section of the Poker1 library in the near future.

All the missing statistical tables from the old Poker1 site will also be added soon.

Mike,

Will the analysis provide more certain insight into questions such as below?

That would be very interesting to me.

Question 159: What’s the costliest type of hand that average hold ’em players enter pots with in limit games?

I’m not positive. It might be a category of hands that include K-10 and Q-J, both unsuited, from middle positions.

But my best guess is that the habit of playing aces with weak kickers from early and middle seats is the costliest. Some players just can’t seem to break this habit.

Hi, Catfish –

It's difficult to determine costliest hands. That's because the weakest hands tend to be played rarely, and sometimes they may be used to balance a strategy or for a surprise attack. When played sparingly, weak hands fare better than they would if played routinely, if against quality opponents. That doesn't mean they make money, but that they may lose less than they should relative to other hands.

Straight Flushes,
Mike Caro
