The adverts that seem to start right when you get back from your summer holiday, the cost, the effort, the time, the whole damn thing.....bah hum bug!

Seriously, I love Christmas, how does everyone else celebrate it?

I have the full Christmas dinner - starter, then roast turkey, loads of different veg, stuffing, pigs in blankets, etc, then more puddings than you care to mention. We start the day with buzz fizz, the kids get a stocking full of silly/joke presents, then we have toast. Then it's into the presents. After this I generally escape to the kitchen and hibernate with a bottle of some description. Leaving the wife and kids to cause mayhem and chaos. I'll emerge occasionally to put down a revolt or join in on the carnage - which ever my fuddled brain decides is more fun.

Groaning and stuffed following the meal, we all generally collapse into the sofa's and either doze and watch some Disney film, or watch some disney film and doze...

Later when someone gains consciousness we'll stir ourselves and play games, whilst munching on anything...

The kids get to stay up until they drop, when we'll put them to bed.

The wife and I, normally don't last much longer than them.....

What would you buy??

I thought I'd start this topic, as this is what I thought the other topic in 'poker' was going to be about.

So if you won the main event at WSOP what would you buy/spend your winnings on?

Let's try and use our imaginations instead of just listing a house, explain what type, where, etc, etc

For instances I would buy a plot of land in Staffordshire, Uk and have an environmentally friendly, 5 bedroom, 4bathroom, 4 reception room home built and a great big fence around it.

I'd sort out a few close relatives, to make them more comfortable financially.

Save the odd polar bear or two.

Several cars and bikes, including a porche 911 for the wife (she has limited taste in cars), a BIG winnibago. An Alfa Romeo GT for me to play in, and a GSXR1000 for a bike.

Loads more, but I'll see what everyone else comes up with before carrying on with the holidays, tv, sterio, pc, etc....

3 card brag strategies

Hi, does anyone know of a decent source for strategy material on 3 card brag? There's loads of poker info, but none on brag; bit of a shame, coz it's a great game, a bit like draw poker in that psychology and tells have a larger role. Good training for that side of the game in hold 'em, but its best if the lessons don't cost too much!

When Martingale works

Ok, I've been testing this out and it seems to work.

On the 3 card poker game over at 32 Red you can bet only on the "pairs plus" game, without betting on the actual hand.

I've been using a sort of Martingale system to play this. Now I know the Martingale system is crap for Roulette etc, but with the pairs plus game the payout is 1:1 for pairs, but goes up for better hands.

The maximum bet is £200 and you can start at 50, which means there's 9 bets inbetween. So long as you get at least a pair in those 9 bets you can't lose, but you can still win

I just won £350 when I got a straight on a £50 bet.

It does test the nerves a bit sticking £50 down after a losing streak, but winning a weeks wages certainly helps

Give it a try and see what you think! 32 Red Casino

3 card poker is in the "table games" section

Flash

roulette players.......

i dont know how many roulette players there are out there, but i have a crazy little system and i was wondering if anyone has tried anything similiar i have not yet got busted doing this. i know it is likely to be a matter of time but so far so good, so here is it: ok i have all 38 numbers on the wheel memorized in order and what i do is put the 38 numbers into 3 categories i call them my A, B, and C groups each group has 14 numbers in it and what i do after one group hasnt hit within at least 6 spins i then start betting that group doing a progression betting system until it hits and since i am betting every 3rd number all the way around the wheel i have alot of it covered at a time these are $1.00 bets i start off with and i always hit within 5 spins and by the way if it goes past 8 spins i am out $475.00 but hasnt happened yet it did go 7 spins one time but i got away from my rules and made a mistake so it was me that was wrong in that case the rule is that when dealers change start counting over only after new dealer has made at least 8 spins then start looking for the groups that are not being hit at that time, now betting dollars this averages me about 5.50 per spin for every time i do this and i am doing this i say about 20 spins per hour ($110.00 per hour) i think they are getting about 50 spins per hour. the rest of the time i am either betting on first second or third twelve set of numbers it keeps me mostly about even or a little behind, but anyway does anyone else who plays roulette do this and if so have they got busted yet or have any other suggestions but to me if it works dont mess with it i got a good average and it is gambling but i am a gambler...

by the way knowing all 38 numbers in order and being able to quickly recall them is a great tool in this game i made flash cards to teach myself, and i can quickly tell you what any number is next to and it makes a difference in this game believe me..

Mike and the administerators

And no I'm not talking about a new pop band....

Where are they, haven't seen of them online, nor posting, replying etc....

are we on our own.....

Rounders Final Hand

This topic has been on other forums on the internet but here it is on this one: What did KGB have on the final hand of the movie Rounders?

Before you go any further, if you haven't seen the movie, don't read on as this post is a spoiler.

The following description of the hand was taken from Copyright83 from the FullTiltPoker forum and editted (I was too lazy to type it myself):

At this point, the blinds are $50/$100. KGB has about $20k in front of him; Mike has $40k.

KGB has the button and the big blind.

Mike raises to $200 with 9s 8s. KGB calls.

Pot: $400.

The flop comes down 6d 7s 10h, giving Mike the nut straight. He checks, and KGB bets $2,000. Mike calls.

Pot: $4,400.

The turn is the 2c. Mike checks and KGB bets $4,400.
Mike calls.

Pot: $13,200.

The river is the As. Mike checks, and KGB moves all in.
(His comment was "the ace couldn't have helped you.") Mike calls and flips his hand revealing the nuts.

KGB's hand is never shown.

What did he have? I have a pretty good guess but I'll give you all first crack at it.

LIFE TILT CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR (POKER) HEALTH

Well hello everyone,

You might not have noticed, but I've been missing....

...and I could tell you it's because of 'around the world race' or 'secret mission' - but they'd just be a load of rubbish.

It's just that we had a fairly hellish time since Christmas.

But after a few weeks away from the keyboard and poker and life in general, I'm coming back.....

NOW FOR A WARNING!!!!!

Beware 'LIFE TILT'

As I have said we had a rough period around Christmas, for respite from our woes I kept playing poker, and boy did I find out the hard way, that when you play with troubles it's way worse than the poker tilt caused by a bad beat or two......I managed to demolish 90% of my bankroll before I got the message!

So I finally worked it out, I stopped playing, reading, thinking about poker. Stopped spending so much time on the net, found the remote for the telly, and watched inane drivvle (the stuff wives like) - ER, Bones, blah, blah...junk

I've been playing about 3 weeks now, starting off slow, one table at a time, back down to the $2 SnG's, gradually regaining my confidence, I'm back to a mixture of $2 -$6 SnG multitables, I've got my bankroll back to a little over $200 (from a low point of $57.63) and finally visiting the forum.

I've got a lot of reading to do, and maybe a comment or six....

LIFE TILT CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR (POKER) HEALTH

Should we fear this man or his country? Rejection of domination and aggression, defense of the oppressed, and longing for peace constitute the legitimate demand of the peoples of the world, particularly the new generations and the spirited youth, who aspire a world free from decadence, aggression and injustice, and replete with love and compassion. The youth have a right to seek justice and the Truth; and they have a right to build their own future on the foundations of love, compassion and tranquility. And, I praise the Almighty for this immense blessing.

Madame President, Excellencies,

What afflicts humanity today is certainly not compatible with human dignity; the Almighty has not created human beings so that they could transgress against others and oppress them.

By causing war and conflict, some are fast expanding their domination, accumulating greater wealth and usurping all the resources, while others endure the resulting poverty, suffering and misery.

Some seek to rule the world relying on weapons and threats, while others live in perpetual insecurity and danger.

Some occupy the homeland of others, thousands of kilometers away from their borders, interfere in their affairs and control their oil and other resources and strategic routes, while others are bombarded daily in their own homes; their children murdered in the streets and alleys of their own country and their homes reduced to rubble.

Such behavior is not worthy of human beings and runs counter to the Truth, to justice and to human dignity. The fundamental question is that under such conditions, where should the oppressed seek justice? Who, or what organization defends the rights of the oppressed, and suppresses acts of aggression and oppression? Where is the seat of global justice?

A brief glance at a few examples of the most pressing global issues can further illustrate the problem.

A. The unbridled expansion of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons

Some powers proudly announce their production of second and third generations of nuclear weapons. What do they need these weapons for? Is the development and stockpiling of these deadly weapons designed to promote peace and democracy? Or, are these weapons, in fact, instruments of coercion and threat against other peoples and governments? How long should the people of the world live with the nightmare of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons? What bounds the powers producing and possessing these weapons? How can they be held accountable before the international community? And, are the inhabitants of these countries content with the waste of their wealth and resources for the production of such destructive arsenals? Is it not possible to rely on justice, ethics and wisdom instead of these instruments of death? Aren't wisdom and justice more compatible with peace and tranquility than nuclear, chemical and biological weapons? If wisdom, ethics and justice prevail, then oppression and aggression will be uprooted, threats will wither away and no reason will remain for conflict. This is a solid proposition because most global conflicts emanate from injustice, and from the powerful, not being contented with their own rights, striving to devour the rights of others.

People across the globe embrace justice and are willing to sacrifice for its sake.

Would it not be easier for global powers to ensure their longevity and win hearts and minds through the championing of real promotion of justice, compassion and peace, than through continuing the proliferation of nuclear and chemical weapons and the threat of their use?

The experience of the threat and the use of nuclear weapons is before us. Has it achieved anything for the perpetrators other than exacerbation of tension, hatred and animosity among nations?

B. Occupation of countries and exacerbation of hostilities

Occupation of countries, including Iraq, has continued for the last three years. Not a day goes by without hundreds of people getting killed in cold blood. The occupiers are incapable of establishing security in Iraq. Despite the establishment of the lawful Government and National Assembly of Iraq, there are covert and overt efforts to heighten insecurity, magnify and aggravate differences within Iraqi society, and instigate civil strife.

There is no indication that the occupiers have the necessary political will to eliminate the sources of instability. Numerous terrorists were apprehended by the Government of Iraq, only to be let loose under various pretexts by the occupiers.

It seems that intensification of hostilities and terrorism serves as a pretext for the continued presence of foreign forces in Iraq.

Where can the people of Iraq seek refuge, and from whom should the Government of Iraq seek justice?

Who can ensure Iraq's security? Insecurity in Iraq affects the entire region. Can the Security Council play a role in restoring peace and security in Iraq, while the occupiers are themselves permanent members of the Council? Can the Security Council adopt a fair decision in this regard?

Consider the situation in Palestine:

The roots of the Palestinian problem go back to the Second World War. Under the pretext of protecting some of the survivors of that War, the land of Palestine was occupied through war, aggression and the displacement of millions of its inhabitants; it was placed under the control of some of the War survivors, bringing even larger population groups from elsewhere in the world, who had not been even affected by the Second World War; and a government was established in the territory of others with a population collected from across the world at the expense of driving millions of the rightful inhabitants of the land into a diaspora and homelessness. This is a great tragedy with hardly a precedent in history. Refugees continue to live in temporary refugee camps, and many have died still hoping to one day return to their land. Can any logic, law or legal reasoning justify this tragedy? Can any member of the United Nations accept such a tragedy occurring in their own homeland?

The pretexts for the creation of the regime occupying Al-Qods Al-Sharif are so weak that its proponents want to silence any voice trying to merely speak about them, as they are concerned that shedding light on the facts would undermine the raison d'être of this regime, as it has. The tragedy does not end with the establishment of a regime in the territory of others. Regrettably, from its inception, that regime has been a constant source of threat and insecurity in the Middle East region, waging war and spilling blood and impeding the progress of regional countries, and has also been used by some powers as an instrument of division, coercion, and pressure on the people of the region. Reference to these historical realities may cause some disquiet among supporters of this regime. But these are sheer facts and not myth. History has unfolded before our eyes.

Worst yet, is the blanket and unwarranted support provided to this regime.

Just watch what is happening in the Palestinian land. People are being bombarded in their own homes and their children murdered in their own streets and alleys. But no authority, not even the Security Council, can afford them any support or protection. Why?

At the same time, a Government is formed democratically and through the free choice of the electorate in a part of the Palestinian territory. But instead of receiving the support of the so-called champions of democracy, its Ministers and Members of Parliament are illegally abducted and incarcerated in full view of the international community.

Which council or international organization stands up to protect this brutally besieged Government? And why can't the Security Council take any steps?

Let me here address Lebanon:

For thirty-three long days, the Lebanese lived under the barrage of fire and bombs and close to 1.5 million of them were displaced; meanwhile some members of the Security Council practically chose a path that provided ample opportunity for the aggressor to achieve its objectives militarily. We witnessed that the Security Council of the United Nations was practically incapacitated by certain powers to even call for a ceasefire. The Security Council sat idly by for so many days, witnessing the cruel scenes of atrocities against the Lebanese while tragedies such as Qana were persistently repeated. Why?

In all these cases, the answer is self-evident. When the power behind the hostilities is itself a permanent member of the Security Council, how then can this Council fulfill its responsibilities?

C. Lack of respect for the rights of members of the international community

Excellencies,

I now wish to refer to some of the grievances of the Iranian people and speak to the injustices against them.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a member of the IAEA and is committed to the NPT. All our nuclear activities are transparent, peaceful and under the watchful eyes of IAEA inspectors. Why then are there objections to our legally recognized rights? Which governments object to these rights? Governments that themselves benefit from nuclear energy and the fuel cycle. Some of them have abused nuclear technology for non-peaceful ends including the production of nuclear bombs, and some even have a bleak record of using them against humanity.

Which organization or Council should address these injustices? Is the Security Council in a position to address them? Can it stop violations of the inalienable rights of countries? Can it prevent certain powers from impeding scientific progress of other countries?

The abuse of the Security Council, as an instrument of threat and coercion, is indeed a source of grave concern.

Some permanent members of the Security Council, even when they are themselves parties to international disputes, conveniently threaten others with the Security Council and declare, even before any decision by the Council, the condemnation of their opponents by the Council. The question is: what can justify such exploitation of the Security Council, and doesn't it erode the credibility and effectiveness of the Council? Can such behavior contribute to the ability of the Council to maintain security?

Excellencies,

A review of the preceding historical realities would lead to the conclusion that regrettably, justice has become a victim of force and aggression. Many global arrangements have become unjust, discriminatory and irresponsible as a result of undue pressure from some of the powerful; Threats with nuclear weapons and other instruments of war by some powers have taken the place of respect for the rights of nations and the maintenance and promotion of peace and tranquility;

For some powers, claims of promotion of human rights and democracy can only last as long as they can be used as instruments of pressure and intimidation against other nations. But when it comes to the interests of the claimants, concepts such as democracy, the right of self-determination of nations, respect for the rights and intelligence of peoples, international law and justice have no place or value. This is blatantly manifested in the way the elected Government of the Palestinian people is treated as well as in the support extended to the Zionist regime. It does not matter if people are murdered in Palestine, turned into refugees, captured, imprisoned or besieged; that must not violate human rights.

- Nations are not equal in exercising their rights recognized by international law. Enjoying these rights is dependent on the whim of certain major powers.

- Apparently the Security Council can only be used to ensure the security and the rights of some big powers. But when the oppressed are decimated under bombardment, the Security Council must remain aloof and not even call for a ceasefire. Is this not a tragedy of historic proportions for the Security Council, which is charged with maintaining the security of countries?

- The prevailing order of contemporary global interactions is such that certain powers equate themselves with the international community, and consider their decisions superseding that of over 180 countries. They consider themselves the masters and rulers of the entire world and other nations as only second class in the world order.

Excellencies,

The question needs to be asked: if the Governments of the United States or the United Kingdom who are permanent members of the Security Council, commit aggression, occupation and violation of international law, which of the organs of the UN can take them to account? Can a Council in which they are privileged members address their violations? Has this ever happened? In fact, we have repeatedly seen the reverse. If they have differences with a nation or state, they drag it to the Security Council and as claimants, arrogate to themselves simultaneously the roles of prosecutor, judge and executioner. Is this a just order? Can there be a more vivid case of discrimination and more clear evidence of injustice?

Regrettably, the persistence of some hegemonic powers in imposing their exclusionist policies on international decision making mechanisms, including the Security Council, has resulted in a growing mistrust in global public opinion, undermining the credibility and effectiveness of this most universal system of collective security.

Excellencies,

How long can such a situation last in the world? It is evident that the behavior of some powers constitutes the greatest challenge before the Security Council, the entire organization and its affiliated agencies.

The present structure and working methods of the Security Council, which are legacies of the Second World War, are not responsive to the expectations of the current generation and the contemporary needs of humanity.

Today, it is undeniable that the Security Council, most critically and urgently, needs legitimacy and effectiveness. It must be acknowledged that as long as the Council is unable to act on behalf of the entire international community in a transparent, just and democratic manner, it will neither be legitimate nor effective. Furthermore, the direct relation between the abuse of veto and the erosion of the legitimacy and effectiveness of the Council has now been clearly and undeniably established. We cannot, and should not, expect the eradication, or even containment, of injustice, imposition and oppression without reforming the structure and working methods of the Council.

Is it appropriate to expect this generation to submit to the decisions and arrangements established over half a century ago? Doesn't this generation or future generations have the right to decide themselves about the world in which they want to live?

Today, serious reform in the structure and working methods of the Security Council is, more than ever before, necessary. Justice and democracy dictate that the role of the General Assembly, as the highest organ of the United Nations, must be respected. The General Assembly can then, through appropriate mechanisms, take on the task of reforming the Organization and particularly rescue the Security Council from its current state. In the interim, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the African continent should each have a representative as a permanent member of the Security Council, with veto privilege. The resulting balance would hopefully prevent further trampling of the rights of nations.

Madame President,

Excellencies,

It is essential that spirituality and ethics find their rightful place in international relations. Without ethics and spirituality, attained in light of the teachings of Divine prophets, justice, freedom and human rights cannot be guaranteed.

Resolution of contemporary human crises lies in observing ethics and spirituality and the governance of righteous people of high competence and piety.

Should respect for the rights of human beings become the predominant objective, then injustice, ill-temperament, aggression and war will fade away.

Human beings are all God's creatures and are all endowed with dignity and respect.

No one has superiority over others. No individual or states can arrogate to themselves special privileges, nor can they disregard the rights of others and, through influence and pressure, position themselves as the "international community".

Citizens of Asia, Africa, Europe and America are all equal. Over 6 billion inhabitants of the earth are all equal and worthy of respect. Justice and protection of human dignity are the two pillars in maintaining sustainable peace, security and tranquility in the world.

It is for this reason that we state:

Sustainable peace and tranquility in the world can only be attained through justice, spirituality, ethics, compassion and respect for human dignity.

All nations and states are entitled to peace, progress and security.

We are all members of the international community and we are all entitled to insist on the creation of a climate of compassion, love and justice.

All members of the United Nations are affected by both the bitter and the sweet events and developments in today's world.

We can adopt firm and logical decisions, thereby improving the prospects of a better life for current and future generations.

Together, we can eradicate the roots of bitter maladies and afflictions, and instead, through the promotion of universal and lasting values such as ethics, spirituality and justice, allow our nations to taste the sweetness of a better future.

Peoples, driven by their divine nature, intrinsically seek Good, Virtue, Perfection and Beauty. Relying on our peoples, we can take giant steps towards reform and pave the road for human perfection. Whether we like it or not, justice, peace and virtue will sooner or later prevail in the world with the will of Almighty God. It is imperative, and also desirable, that we too contribute to the promotion of justice and virtue.

The Almighty and Merciful God, who is the Creator of the Universe, is also its Lord and Ruler. Justice is His command. He commands His creatures to support one another in Good, virtue and piety, and not in decadence and corruption.

He commands His creatures to enjoin one another to righteousness and virtue and not to sin and transgression. All Divine prophets from the Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) to the Prophet Moses (peace be upon him), to the Prophet Jesus Christ (peace be upon him), to the Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him), have all called humanity to monotheism, justice, brotherhood, love and compassion. Is it not possible to build a better world based on monotheism, justice, love and respect for the rights of human beings, and thereby transform animosities into friendship?

I emphatically declare that today's world, more than ever before, longs for just and righteous people with love for all humanity; and above all longs for the perfect righteous human being and the real savior who has been promised to all peoples and who will establish justice, peace and brotherhood on the planet.

0, Almighty God, all men and women are Your creatures and You have ordained their guidance and salvation. Bestow upon humanity that thirsts for justice, the perfect human being promised to all by You, and make us among his followers and among those who strive for his return and his cause.

--------------------------------------------------------

What do you guys think? Taken at face value, it kind of makes me wish that this guy was running our show.

Not that I'm 100% a Bush hater, but, I don't think it can be denied that the U.N. has stood idley by while flagrant abuses of power by it's members has gone on over and over again.

Think about what would happen if Iran told us we could not enrich uranium to run our country with nuclear power.

What about if Iraq came over here and hunted down Bush because he's harboring chemical weapons that don't really exsist? I MEAN LIKE SUPER-COOL BORDER-LINE AWESOME?

It would sooooo cool if at the "BRUNSON & CARO FORUMS" we could actually read posts and interact with Doyle Brunson or Mike Caro. Hell, I would really like to hear from Todd Brunson too!

I mean, what gives? I know Mike used to post on here back around the Vietnam War era (so I'm exaggerating) but it would be really cool if he could maybe take 5 minutes out of every week or two to post a question or comment we all could answer and then maybe take 5 more minutes to post an answer or response. How about something even as small as just popping by to say "hello".

Oh, geez, I'm so inconsiderate. What if something bad has happened to Mr. Caro?! I hope not. I hope he didn't lose his hands in some horrible farming accident or something equally terrible leaving him with no way to possibly type on a keyboard...

Hear me out. I, along with the majority of the people that would be stopping by the site to check things out or learn some new things, deeply respect and appreciate Mr. Caro and Mr. Brunson for everything they have done for Poker...

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it would be really cool if they would still post on here. Either that or maybe rename the forum to "The Poker1.com Forum" or the "I'm Too Busy To Interact With My Fans and Students and People That Buy My Books and DVDs Forum".. <cough cough>

I might come off kind of rough, but, am I wrong?

G O N E F O R E V E R

Losing due to...

If you're always losing at one site, even for superstitious reasons... don't play at that site. A little superstition can actually protect you.

Mike Caro talks about players who always change from unlucky seats... maybe it's not exactly luck as the super aggressor on their left that makes it a bad seat. But a weak player would have no way of knowing the difference since he attributes everything to luck. However he still makes the correct decision to change seats because his views do have some merit. But it's hard to improve if you don't think your decisions would matter.

In the same way you can't say for sure the person who always believes he's cheated that he's not. If he always plays and loses at the same place, it's possible he's always being cheated and can just never figure out how. But this kind of person that'd say that no matter what would never figure out what's wrong with his game.

Also, you can't discount someone completely who attributes everything to skill. Someone like that might think that even if he loses his whole house that he actually won because he made the highest quality decisions all the time. And he's content just knowing that. For instance, if his AA was "cracked" by 23o, he wouldn't even think of it as being cracked. He'd just say he beat his opponent even though he didn't actually win the hand. That viewpoint has some merit too. But someone like that wouldn't be able to figure out when he's being cheated or if other factors are at work (like tilt).

All three of these viewpoints are "right" in that they can't be proven wrong. But experience tells us that one viewpoint is superior to another. And that's different for different people. But the truth is almost certainly somewhere in the middle.

The new Millenium according to Mike

I have just reviewed the 6th quiz in Mike's University-section. He claims that this Millenium began on the 1st of January, 2001. I decided to check this on the net, and tried to look it up in Wikipedia. I didn't bother to read everything, but it seems to me that this is debatable. I thought it was eoungh to worry about that year 1901 was in the 20th century, and know I learn that someone says that year 1900 is in the 19th century. It's easy to get confused.

Something that's clearly not right is that Mike writes "Millennium". According to Wikipedia it's written with only one "n".

Any comments on this shocking inaccuracy? I was too lazy to double-check with another source, by the way. Maybe I missed something

Can any body see your cards when you’re playing online?

Has any body heard of software called scancardsnow? The exact nature of the Predictor varies between retellings of the paradox, but the character always has a reputation for being completely infallible and incapable of error. The Predictor can be presented as a psychic, as a superintelligent alien, as God, etc.

The player of the game is presented with two opaque boxes, labeled A and B. The player is permitted to take the contents of both boxes, or just of box B. (The option of taking only box A is ignored, for reasons soon to be obvious.) Box A contains $1,000. The contents of box B, however, are determined as follows: At some point before the start of the game, the Predictor makes a prediction as to whether the player of the game will take just box B, or both boxes. If the Predictor predicts that both boxes will be taken, then box B will contain nothing. If the Predictor predicts that only box B will be taken, then box B will contain $1,000,000.

By the time the game begins, and the player is called upon to choose which boxes to take, the prediction has already been made, and the contents of box B have already been determined. That is, box B contains either $0 or $1,000,000 before the game begins, and once the game begins even the Predictor is powerless to change the contents of the boxes. Before the game begins, the player is aware of all the rules of the game, including the two possible contents of box B, the fact that its contents is based on the Predictor's prediction, and knowledge of the Predictor's infallibility. The only information withheld from the player is what prediction the Predictor made, and thus what the contents of box B are.

Predicted choice

Actual choice

Payout

A and B

A and B

$1,000

A and B

B only

$0

B only

A and B

$1,001,000

B only

B only

$1,000,000

The problem is called a paradox because two strategies that both sound intuitively logical give conflicting answers to the question of what choice maximizes the player's payout. The first strategy argues that, regardless of what prediction the Predictor has made, taking both boxes yields more money. That is, if the prediction is for both A and B to be taken, then the player's decision becomes a matter of choosing between $1,000 (by taking A and B) and $0 (by taking just B), in which case taking both boxes is obviously preferable. But, even if the prediction is for the player to take only B, then taking both boxes yields $1,001,000, and taking only B yields only $1,000,000—the difference is slight in the latter case, but taking both boxes is still better, regardless of what prediction has been made.

The second strategy suggests taking only B. By this strategy, we can ignore the possibilities that return $0 and $1,001,000, as they both require that the Predictor has made an incorrect prediction, and the problem states that the Predictor cannot be wrong. Thus, the choice becomes whether to receive $1,000 (both boxes) or to receive $1,000,000 (only box B)—so taking only box B is better.

Does Mike Caro Play Poker Professionally?

Feel free for pouncing down my neck for not knowing this, but does Mike Caro play poker professionally? I was of two minds between “Online Poker” and the first “Super System”, but at $47.50 (Canadian) SS1 was in my mind way too pricey for me as a “beginner” (I paid $21 plus taxes for OP) and the size kind of scared me. (Yes, I am "cheap", but then I want to save my money for playing )

Serge

The Martingale System

This was brought up by Gone Forever in a different thread but I thought it deserved its own.

The following is from Gone Forever:

Never heard of the Martingale? Well, it's a betting system that with a large enough bankroll and table limit, garauntees that no matter how many times you lose, the next time you win, you will come out one bet ahead of when you started to lose.

How does it work?

Easy. You bet whatever the minimum bet is every time. If you lose, you double your bet. You double your bet every time you lose, until you win and then you resume betting the minimum until you lose again.

Say you are betting $5 every time. You have $1000 to gamble with and there are no table maximums.

Bet $5. Win. $1005 now.

Bet $5. Lose. $1000 now.

Bet $10. Lose. $990 now.

Bet $20. Lose. $970 now.

Bet $40. Win. $1010 now.

What a lot of people do and why it could be hazardous:

If you were to bet $5 every single time and never double your bets you would be down $5. (+5 -5 -5 -5 +5)

If you were to bet $5 and double your bets every time you win you would be down $10. (+5 -10 -5 -5 +5)

I've seen tons of people at the Black Jack tables doubling their bets every single time they win, only to go broke.

I've also seen people go broke by betting the same amount every hand. While Black Jack is a game that can be beat, if you don't know how to beat it, you will most likely go broke.

On a side note... If you are going to use the Martingale for Black Jack, splitting and doubling down will sway this research and could also prove to be very dangerous to your bankroll.

G O N E F O R E V E R

I agree that, given no table maximum and an unlimited bankroll, this system of betting will always generate a profit, just as doubling your bet after a win will always result in a loss, but, with a table maximum, your chances are the same regardless of any system used.

Consider only situation in which you can lose utalizing the Martingale System (all others result in a $5 win):

Bankroll: $1000

Table Min/Max: $5/$200 (a common one used)

Odds of winning 50% (find me a casino that will give you those odds!)

Bet $5. Lose. $995

Bet $10. Lose. $985

Bet $20. Lose. $965

Bet $40. Lose. $925

Bet $80. Lose. $845

Bet $160. Lose. $685

Cannot double bet furter due to table max.

Total loss: $315

The odds of this occuring are 1 in 64 (1/2 to the power of 6) which means, on average, you will win 63 times and lose once.

63 wins x $5 = $315

1 loss x $15 = -$315

Average: $0

Now lets look at the only situation in which you can profit if you double after every win (all others result in a $5 loss):

Bet $5. Win. $1005

Bet $10. Win. $1015

Bet $20. Win. $1035

Bet $40. Win. $1075

Bet $80. Win. $1155

Bet $160. Win. $1315

Cannot double bet furter due to table max.

Total profit: $315

The odds of this occuring are also 1 in 64 which means, on average, you will win 1 once and lose 63 times.

1 win x $315 = $315

63 losses x $5 = -$315

Average: $0

Both systems will result in a $0 average, just like random or fixed betting will.

Of course, playing something like blackjack in a casino, the odds are not 50/50, if you play correctly they are more like 51/49 against, so any system will result in a loss in the long run.

Cardcounting is the only way to beat the game.

Poker Chips Are Dangerous!

Last night I was watching a little TV & playing some online poker. 1AM rolls around and I decide I should have been in bed an hour ago. Oops.

I go ahead and turn everything off. Tv, lights, monitor. I head down the hallway, off to my slumber. Will dreams of sugar plums dance through my head?? No. Apparently there's a much greater chance of stars than sugar plums because about halfway down the hall..... WHAM!!

I nail my foot on my case of poker chips! Stubbed toes? Stubbed foot more like. The pain was so bad and unexpected that I dropped to the ground only to hit my head on my front door!!

I had been using my case of chips to hold down a new mat that was rolled up. I forgot I had moved them and since all the lights were off I never saw it coming.... er... waiting. Yes, that's it! It was waiting for me! In ambush even!

No lump, no concusion, but I do think my toe directly next to my big toe is broken. It's purplish in color now.

Anyway, thought everybody could use a good laugh at my expense.

G O N E F O R E V E R

broken web site link

the following page is displayed if you attempt to enter the university prior to logging on...

looks very tacky...

btw: you should really consider using a "real world"
web server like freebsd/apache instead of the
present microsloppy/iis you presently use...
(just an opinon, from a pro in the computing world)

Cannot use a leading .. to exit above the top directory.

Server Error in '/' Application.

Cannot use a leading .. to exit above the top directory.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. It's not that we don't have one, we spend gbp40.00 per month to ensure we have all the SKY channels (500+) it's just that I'm very good at finding the off button and doing other things. The one exception has been whenever they are showing West Wing, for that it's programmed in as soon as it is announced. I do enjoy watching films as well.

Anyone that has never seen or heard of it should rent/buy/borrow a copy of series one. It takes a couple of episodes to take in what is going on as it seems to move very fast, and quite a lot of the time it seems that what is not said is more important to the storyline.

It's NOT aimed at the lowbrow. It's created by Aaron Sorkin, but I believe he left during series 5.

Does anyone know anything else he has done?

Does anyone else like/dislike the series.

I haven't seen series 6, so don't tell me!

So I say again, if Reagan can do it, then Martin Sheen for president.....

Paradox from a poker player

Mike,

I have just read your article titled 'A paradox from a poker-playing reading'

QUOTE:

'However, the question is easy to summarize: There are two envelopes. One contains twice as much as the other. So, if the envelope you choose contains $100, the other will contain either $50 or $200. Should you switch?'

I can not find your answer to this question. However my answer is, surely you should switch regardless of the amount in envelope one as your expectation before opening the first envelope is zero+ x, and your expectation before opening envelope two is x+100% or x - 50%

So based on this being an even money bet you should take the bet with confidence as you are betting half x to get 2x, but aside from that you are still achieving your original expectation of zero +x, where x is ANY amount greater than zero.

Could you please direct me to your answer or post it here. As I have said before I am a bit of a nerd with numbers, I can play with them for hours....

Thanks

Before "we" play

Is there any "thing"-"routine"-"ritual" that YOU do before you go out and play poker for money ?

Over to you guys/gals

MTK

Six days before she turns 16, Michelle Wie turns pro!!

Wow,

It would have been nice to land a $5 million Nike deal 6 days before my 16th birthday....

I wonder what kind of car she will buy with that?

WhirledPeace

Which do you prefer?

Which do you prefer?
