I've got the button, so I decide to raise to 1500. Only the limper calls, making the pot 3900 (I'm down to a 7500 stack to his 10000).

Flop comes down a rainbow 4TQ. He checks. I go for a 1000 raise. My thinking is that if he had something on this kind of flop, he'd have bet, so I figure I could steal it here. But no, he reraises me to 3000 total.

Now, I've been playing with this guy for a long time. My read on him is that he is pretty loose and aggressive (which is why I thought he would've bet if he had something on that flop). He knows me well enough to know that I'm usually very tight and would not get myself committed unless I was feeling really good about my hand. He's also loves the check-raise if he sees typical steal situations like the blind steal or the continuation bet.

So I decided to push all in for my last 6500. I'm certain he wasn't too confident about his hand and that his raise was a purely defensive move, he's not actually raising with too powerful a hand here. Besides, the way I've been betting, he's gotta be convinced I got a beast, right?

Wrong.

He thought about it for a looong time before finally calling. He shows up QJ and wins with his queens.

Now, let's list my mistakes one by one, shall we?

1 - Raising on the button with 78 suited. A debatable move, some would say good, some would say bad. Good in that this is the part of the game where the most aggressive player often wins, and I got the button. Bad in that 78 is not particularly strong here, even if it's four handed, plus the guy limped before me, he's smart enough not to put in 600 without being prepared for a potential raise somewhere in the field.

2 - Betting 1000 on the flop. At this point, I'm starting to commit too many chips when I don't have a winning hand. I'm essentially hoping, praying either for him to fold or for me to hit something on the turn and river. It's a bad idea to do that, get your money in and pray.

3 - Raising all-in. This was by far the worst mistake. I wasn't thinking about what kinds of hands he could have that caused him to limp/call a preflop raise then check/raise me on the flop. Such action screams of at least something good. Besides, when I pushed all in, he had to call 4500 into a pot over 14000, over 3-to-1 odds. Even ace high might call that.

So how did I not see his call coming? The only answer I got is that I don't have the first freakin' clue. I consider myself pretty skilled, but these all-in bluff situations have killed me in virtually every tournament I've played in lately. I understand that if you want to bluff all-in, you gotta have some conditions first:

A - Leave yourself some outs.
B - Push all-in against tight players.
C - Try to wait until the turn and/or river before pushing.

I'm convinced by now of one of three things: I can't stop picking bad spots for the all-in bluff, I got a major tell that people pick up on, or the all-in bluff simply doesn't work.

I'm pretty sure the main reason is my poor spot-picking, but let's speculate on whether or not the all-in bluff actually works.

First of all, when you do it, you're basically hoping your opponent folds. In the absence of any real read or an ability to range his hands based on the action and board texture, such a move will rarely go your way because you won't be capable of making a good judgment on good or bad spots for it.

Second of all, is it really worth it to risk your entire tournament on this one bluff, especially if you got a decent enough stack to last a little while longer? Committing too much money on nothing is, more often than not, a bad play.

Third, even if you're semi-bluffing and have some outs, you're still gonna be behind if he has as much as a pair, or maybe even ace high. Best you could hope for is if you got 15 outs to an open ender and flush draw, which puts you in an almost coinflip situation should you go all in on the flop and he calls. So basically, you're putting yourself all-in when you're behind most of the time.

Anyway, I just wanted to get all that off my chest. Like I said, all-in bluffs are killing me and I'm convinced by now that they just don't work, that it's just a terrible play.

Convince me otherwise.

Does a dealt, non-played hand matter?

I'm having an arguement with my brother-in-law. In a tournament, players are dealt a hand whether or not they are in a seat. If they are not present when it's their turn to act, their hand is automatically folded. The arguement is this:

Say we have an 8-person table and one of the players is missing. Would the fact that there's an automatically folded hand make a difference in your starting hand requirement? My brother-in-law claims that if you hold an ace, it would lose value because the more hands are dealt out, the less likely it is that you will pair your ace. Therefore, he'd have a tighter starting hand requirement - just as if the 8th player was there. He looks at is "if X hands are dealt, then there are X Aces out there."

While I can't argue that logic (that there theoretically may be less aces in the deck), it doesn't change anything when it comes to counting your outs. For example: if you flop a flush draw, you're still counting 9 outs - whether there's 2 hands in play or 10. For that reason, it doesn't make a difference. My second arguement is that if the hand is automatically folded, that's one less hand you have to beat. If anything, you should be more liberal or more aggressive with your starting hand requirements.

I realize this is highly theoretical, but it would be good to hear some feedback either way. I'm going to burst this bubble right now.

A couple months ago, a man posted in behind on the cut-off. Everyone folded to him, and he raised. The blinds called, and he wound up winning with a K8o. The man on my left, one of the members of the blinds, commented, "why would you ever raise with a K8o? That makes no sense at all! I can't believe how people..."

After he was done, I simply retorted, "Reason has nothing to do with it." He replied in complete astonishment to the simplicity of this truth, "You know, I think you're right!"

That's the lesson that players need to learn to defeat opponents that think differently than they do. Yesterday, at my middle-limit hold'em game here in Minnesota, there was a man that would not re-raise with pocket aces from the small blind, saying he doesn't want to chase them out. Obviously for those who play limit hold'em, you must re-raise here to charge people to draw out on your hand.

He says he wants to keep them in, but then he gets upset when they draw out on him on the larger pot he wanted to create. That's not exactly logical. That thinking doesn't from A-to-B-to-C. However, you must put yourself in his shoes and think the way that he thinks for a while, because then you can beat his thinking and show why A doesn't flow to B, and hence to C.

What I'm saying is that when your opponents deviate from solid strategy, you should also adjust to a more exploitative strategy. If your opponents call too much, then you need to bet for value more. If you're opponents bluff too much, then you need to make opportunities for them to bluff. But, if you are assuming that your opponents play like you do, you're costing yourself money, and you're thinking to centrally. Every opponent is unique, and they all need "special care", hehe.

The more you observe their nuance, the more and more you'll be able to peg his game. Don't start exploiting before you have the game pegged. Lull them to sleep with your normal play, and then when you've got the information (watching the cards he plays, his reaction to cards, how he handles his chips when he's strong and weak, etc.) you're ready to devise a strategy to beat that particular opponent. This is the key to "getting his number". Getting the number is something that is done inbetween hands. Outplaying him is a natural consequence when the cirumstances are created.

Only deviate those decisions that are not clear-cut. For instance, if someone is raising too much before the flop in a no-limit hold'em, it is seldom correct to just limp in with aces. That's ammeaturish. It's better to raise, mainly because that same opponent will re-raise, and that's the time you starting thinking about playing it slow. Don't play it slow with one-pair and numerous opponents when the pot is small. Play it slow when you're heads-up, the pot is built, and you have a powerful hand. This man is ready to bluff it all away, and you set up that opportunity by allowing him to jeapordize his entire stack in a pot that is worth winning to him! That's the dream opportunity you want to create.

When you have aces in early, it's a clear-cut raise. So, raise. Don't deviate your strategy so much to where you are out to "get him". But, do deviate strategy enough to where it's still yours, but wins more money than the usual solid game you play against typical opponents.

Yes, occasionally the opponent will beat you, or you never get a hand against him. You observe him for hours, and the circumstances to win the money don't happen. National events cost only £75.00 and regional events only £20.00

Plus they have a forum (which I am only just looking at for the first time, so no idea yet how good)

Have a look.

Thoughts for newbies

Hi all,

I started replying to a post from a relative newbie, but some of my points didn't quite fit in the topic, so I thought I'd add them here.

I've been playing for just 3years, I started in a weekly home game, then progressed to internet and then to b&m. Each year I have been in the black, but far more importantly I have amass 1000's of hours of play, read and reread 20+ books, watch countless hours on the TV/internet. I wouldn't concider myself a pro by any stretch of the imagination YET, but I'm definately past the 'newbie' title.

My biggest suggestion for anyone starting out in the game, is get a couple of books (I think you can't go far wrong with Harrington vol 1/2 as your first books) read them, and then start playing freerolls on the internet. Why? because IT'S FREE MONEY!, yes it is full of fish. Yes some players will play any two cards. Yes it take 3-5hours to make the money. But it gives you so much in return, you get hours of experience of the mechanics of the game, It help teach you patients, the value of good starter hands. The further you get in a freeroll the better the standard of play, yes for the first hour the standard is truly terrible, but the last hour everyone left cares much more as they are getting close to the money. Oh and one last thing you get free money occasionally when the fish feed you instead of feeding on you.

If you commit yourself to the game, you will make the money occasionally, and from there you can branch out into Sit'n'Go tournaments and build a small bankroll. Always try to play against players slightly worse than you, and for a newbie then freerolls are where the players that are worse than you are!

Luck is a part of the game, but the higher your skill level compared to the other players in the game the less luck plays a part. Put it this way if you a newbie sat down against a table of world class players you would need a tremendous amount of luck to win, however if a world class player sat down at a table of newbies, how much luck do you think they'd need?

Yes any hand can be a winner, but why play against the odds, if you have 7,2os against a pair of aces you WILL win 1 in 8 hands, but that doesn't mean you should try and do it, because you WILL lose 7 out of 8 times.

You might think that's a pipe dream, but when I first deposited money to my internet account $50.00, it was so that I could withdraw $800.00 that I badly needed, OK I got lucky, last year I managed to blow up and blew my entire online bankroll ($500+), but that was through bad play, and playing when I shouldn't have been. I was fortunate that year that my b&m tournaments netted me near £1500, This year I started out by depositing $80 and now have well over $2000+, I've also won over £1500 in b&m tournaments. I'm still learning, I still reread my books constantly and add to them whenever I happen to end up on amazon.com.

Live v online

Hello Guys
I've been doing a bit of homework since my last post and read a few books. I am still not winning but enjoy the game so much.I tried a live tourney at my local casino and couldnt believe the difference as opposed to online.I realised you don't need the nuts to win, and i wasn't a bad player as i thought.there was many more bad players than me which was nice. My main question is this.....half way through the tourney my concentration seemed to waiver due to it starting to get very late..this was 12.00pm, and as the tourney probably didnt finish until about 2.00am i started to play marginal hands. you can guess i busted out soon after...what do you guys do when you get into that state of mind, and carry on playing good poker. I had been playing for about 3 hours...is this a short time in poker terms? Also after playing a live game...my poker online seemed to improve, was this coincidence or a realisation that i am playing people...i am not sure.

I read you guys posts as i find them very interesting and useful. You all seem to have a vast amount of knowledge which makes me a little jealous...how long have you all been playing?

One more thing and this is quite important.i would like feedback on my play as all new players would, is it possible to play online with you guys anywhere and get tips on where i am going wrong, or advice on how to improve. is this just a stupid idea or is it possible..i personally would find it invaluable while learning to get get information from superior players.

anyway keep up the good work guys....and good luck

Straddle

I was watching High Stakes poker recently and they mentioned the hand or bet had a straddle on it. When i play low buy in tourneys at my local casino i hear that saying quite regular, so regular in fact i haven't got a true meaning of the phrase......so please tell me what BETTING/CALLING FOR VALUE REALLY MEANS. I thought it meant it was worth being in a hand with about 3 or more callers or ALL INS but is it being used when hands have only 2 callers etc.Is it just an excuse to enter a hand for the sake of it?

Is it really worth, or advisable to BET/CALL FOR VALUE when you only have 9 2 o/s like some of these donkeys, or am i the donkey for not doing so. I know some of you guys are very knowledgable at the game and i would be glad of any comments.....thanks in anticipation.

All in and Heads up

When you are all in and heads up against someone, do your cards have to go face up on the table? But a question materialised to me when i was low stacked in my latest tourney.

What is the best way to play against chasers and fish in a low buy in live tourney (£3.00 rebuy 1000 starting chips) as any raises gain very little respect. My problem seems to be when the blinds get a lot higher the game changes, and i need to adapt....what method do you use at this stage..more aggressive? wait for better starting hands? bluff more?

The reason i ask is this, but please do not think i am moaning about a bad beat as i played really poor all night and probably deserved it.

I GOT QQ WHEN LOW STACKED 3800 CHIPS (LEADER AT MY TABLE ON 18,000) BLINDS 300 600...RAISED 1800 GOT 1 CALLER AND 1 ALL IN(HE HAD 2000 CHIPS) GUY TO MY LEFT PUT ME ALL IN...I WAS SOOOHAPPY.

WHEN WE TURNED OVER...GUY TO MY LEFT KAD K4 O/S LOW STACK HAD 35 O/S. flop you probably guessed.....

K 3 J RAINBOW TURN 9 RIVER 5 I ENDED UP 3RD BEST HAND OUT OF THE THREE AND WENT HOME, BUT FOUND IT EXTREMELY FUNNY AS IT WAS LIKE AN INTERNET HAND..LOL

when respect isn't shown to raises how do you play that hand as i can't work out how to play it any different except go all in which probably wouldnt have made any difference in that situation. All the pro players say luck doesn't come into it when playing poker....are they for real or trying to portray an image?

i am going back tomorrow night absolutely determined to win with my new image ( NY peak cap, Huge dark sunglasses, very old t-shirt, bad attitude, jeans, and a lucky charm to lay on top of my hole cards...at 44 years old do you think i might look stupid...hehehehehe) only joking, but i will let you know how i get on.

best regards guys, and keep up the good work

CD from the Book Online Poker (D.Brunson)....

...does not work on my PC. I just thought it was quite an oddity:

Late one Friday night at HPC (Hollywood Park Casino) in Los Angeles, I saw one table hit 3 jackpots in 4 hours. At HPC the jackpots are usually any aces full beaten by a higher hand. Of course, you must play both hole cards.

2 of these jackpots were Aces Full beaten by a higher full. The other was quads beaten by higher quads.

I'm just curious how we could go about figuring the odds of this happening? It was certainly exciting to watch. Needless to say everyone was trying to get into that game for the rest of the night.

Sklarface6

Ever doled out a bad beat?

This was back before I really "learned" how to play poker. Some friends were having a fairly informal "tourney" at the home of someone my group were unfamiliar with. It was a large group of about 18 people playing at 2 tables, $20 buy-in each (a pittance in USD). First place ended up w/ about $240, Second place $100, and Third got his/her money back.

About the 28th or 29th hand, I looked down at As-Qs in a late position, 7th out of 9 positions at that point, if memory serves. Noone had yet been eliminated.

A woman across the table from me in, say 4th position, raised about 5x BB, I called, SB folded, and the fellow in the BB flat-called.

The flop rolled out: Ks-Tc-Js

A beaut of a flop for me, and BB checks. "Jane" bets about a 1000 chips, we started w/ around five thousand. I call w/ the nut straight, and the guy in BB folds. I never found out what he had, probably was a amateur like me and was perhaps defending his blind with a relatively weak hand.

The turn comes: Ts

At this point "Jane" bets out around half her chips, 2.5K or so. I smooth-call, but had I known more about poker back then, I might have raised her all-in at this point, as she was basically pot-committing herself. At any rate...

The river comes: 9c

"Jane" pushes in the rest of her stack. I have her covered by only about 250 in chips and call. "Jane" flips over:

Td-Th, Quad Tens...and starts to rake in the pot! I quickly show my Royal and won the awe of the table...though I finished second that night when all was said and done. Jane's boyfriend was sitting at the other table and heard the commotion. She asked him who the winner was. She couldn't quite believe it herself.

I kind of felt sorry about it, at this point I had never had quads myself (I had only been playing Hold'em for about six mos. at the time) but, c'est la vie! I raked the pot and "Jane" railbirded the other table for awhile before leaving w/ her b/f.

It's one hand I'll never forget as long as I play poker. Do any of you have similar good beat(?) stories? I love hearing about those, I'm just not too fond of hearing stories where you're on the receiving end. Most of those stories make me yawn or, even worse, cringe.

Looking for the odds on flushes

Hi everyone.

Anyone know the odds of one player having a better flush over another?

BACK GROUND

4 players in the hand one player with 8,9 spades, other 3 players hole cards not known. If i got this hand early in a tournament i usually raise, but if someone rerase i fold. I only play this hand hard if i get called and i see
a q on the flop. Worst scenario, is i hit the ace one the flop someone bet and i rerase, and the other person go all in. Usually the person got ak and i m out. So i play this hand very carefully early on, later in the tournament it s a pretty strong hand of course.
The problem is also there because many players play very loose early in the tournament so it s hard to figure out how to play this hand.
