Truly a blessing. this insight is going to add a lot of value to my game. Occasionally i would just give up the two overcards dwpending on the gut feeling however in the chance I'm onnly holding one then i have more of a shot at taking the pot. Kinda of like a spreading out bets in roullete or craps

Hi, Nelson --

The actual quality of starting hands matters less in heads-up poker than in a full-handed game, because the quantity of wins and the pace often take priority.

But, still, there are often long runs where one player will average superior cards relative to an opponent. And that's a great advantage that seldom can be overcome.

So, yes, you'll make considerably more money with strong cards. Powerful hands give you the ability to bet and raise with confidence, rather than just dance. And they mean you hold actually winning tickets the majority of the time, which also makes you invincible in the short term.

I don't claim big hands don't matter in heads-up play. They do, but not as much.

Straight Flushes,

Mike - a simple question- maybe a simple answer. When playing NL heads-up. Generally, can you make more money holding good cards and very good cards preflop, rather than holding poor cards? Definition- Any face card or any pair from 8-Q is good holding, and Q paired or A-10 suited is very good. The best- Nelson.

Wait a minute, if it takes 2500 entries at $10,000 per to win once that's $25 million to win 8? That would make each $10k entry worth about $3k

Hi Mike,
Love the great wisdom about the game that you so freely share. (That's how the computer industry exploded by the way and yes I'm old enough to remember learning to program computers with punched cards!) Thanks for your generous contributions. Can hardly wait til my next Vegas trip to put it to good use.

Hi, Maggie --

Thanks for including the references and links in your online book.

I kind of like the idea of giving Diane a page to list all the offenses. Brilliant! I'm not going to actually do it, but I probably should take your idea and run with it.

Thanks for leaving your first comment and joining our Poker1 family.

I notice that my last paragraph in the entry above was:

Mike, you make such a point about not caring, that it seems you must care. To plagarize the Bard, "Methinks thee doth protest too much..." or words to that effect. (the actual quote involves a lady so maybe not entirely appropriate) Anyway, you obviously care, just not about the same things others may care about. You have your own cares, as do we all, and don't particularly care what others think about them. I admire that. The poker gods don't just stiff us at the table. They take pleasure at seeing us do the slow burn at a variety of venues, not just bestowing a bad beat now and again. Call it fate, the poker gods or just bad luck but it can suck the life out of you if you let it. I like your view of the world; we would all be the better if we could adapt some of that to our own lives.
